The Rangers rookie team won their first game in Traverse City, beating Minnesota 5-2 to avoid finishing last in the tournament.
The Rangers fell behind 2-0 in the second period, but Jesper Fast’s first two goals of the tournament, 14 seconds apart, tied the score at 2. Both goals were assisted by Oscar Lindberg, and Josh Nicholls also assisted on Fast’s second goal. Less than a minute later, Danny Kristo scored from Anthony Duclair and Conor Allen to break the tie.
Andrew Yogan extended the lead in the 3rd period. His goal 7:54 made the game 4-2. Danny Kristo picked up an assist. Yogan later sealed the game with an empty netter which made it a 5-2 final.
Jeff Malcolm stopped 15 of 17 shots.
With two points each today, Oscar Lindberg and Danny Kristo are currently tied for the tournament lead with 7 points. The man they are tied with is Sergey Tolchinsky. Four teams still have one game to play, however.
Training camp opens on Wednesday. We’ll see if Lindberg and Kristo’s strong play will translate against the Rangers’ incumbents.
