Johan Hedberg is attending Ranger camp on a professional try-out, and Marty Biron is absent due to personal issues. No word on what the personal issues are, but one would figure the presence of Hedberg in camp suggests there’s at least a chance the absence will extend into the regular season. I think neither Hedberg nor the Rangers would be interested in him playing in Hartford.
Katie Strang reports, however, that Biron is expected to return soon, possibly as early as tomorrow, adding more mystery to the situation. It’s possible Hedberg just wanted to land a try-out somewhere, and the Rangers were wanted another NHL goalie filling the nets at training camp. It’s not unusual for a player on a try-out with one team to sign with another.
The Rangers have 66 player on their camp roster, including the unsigned Stepan, who isn’t there.
While the roster will likely be released any moment now, I’m still going to take a shot at the camp’s composition:
Besides the 47 players under contract, we know Hedberg and Stepan are on the list. Unsigned prospects Duclair, Skapsi, Graves and Spelling would bring the total to 53. AHL contracts Dodero and Malcolm would make 55. Traverse City try-outs Josh Graves, Barnett, Leroux, Wilson, Fanelli and Oligny likely have the inside track at an invite as well. That would only bring them to 61, so there are still some mystery names out there.
