The Rangers (27-15-4) were defeated by the Montreal Canadiens by a score of 1-0. Max Pacioretty scored the only goal of the game. Henrik Lundqvist made 25 saves, the Rangers took 24 shots on goal.
-This game started off slow tonight, but really picked up midway through the first after Kreider and Subban started going after each other. From that point on, it was a very exciting, heated game. There were scrums after the whistle, a fight, and a lot of action.
-The Canadiens thought they scored in the first period, but after a lengthy review it was determined that there was inconclusive evidence, so the call on the ice stood.
-This game was a great showcase of how talented these two goalies are. Throughout the game they each made big save after big save.
-Unfortunately, the difference was a really soft goal given up by Lundqvist late in the third period. Pacioretty shot one from just in front of the blue line that went through McDonagh’s legs and squeaked by Lundqvist and into the net.
-The Rangers really dominated the third period, the Canadiens made a bunch of key desperation plays to break up solid opportunities, and the ones that they didn’t stop, Price did. The Rangers caught a break when Pacioretty hit the post on a shot on an empty net with about 1:15 left, but they were unable to capitalize.
-A lot of people will talk about the officiating tonight, as they decided to put their whistles in their pockets for the last 8 minutes or so of the game, aside from calling an icing that was very questionable against the Rangers. However, when it comes down to it, the Rangers had more than enough grade A chances tonight to win the game. They will need to start converting on these chances to get back on track.
-All in all, I think the Rangers played well enough to win tonight. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to convert against a hot goalie.
-Tonight’s game was an entertaining battle between two good teams. They will not play again in the regular season. A longer series between the two would be very entertaining come May or June.
The Rangers take on the Carolina Hurricanes at home. Game time is 7pm.
