Talbot and the Rangers Shut Out the Flames

The Rangers (37-16-6) defeated the Calgary Flames by a score of 1-0. Kevin Hayes scored the only goal of the game 3 minutes into the third period.  It was his 12th goal of the season, and was assisted by Brassard. Cam Talbot made 21 saves, earning his 4th shutout of the season, the Rangers took 25 shots on goal.

Comments:

-The Rangers came out flying tonight.  They took the first 6 shots of the game, and had a powerplay opportunity.  Ramo made an outstanding diving save to rob Miller during the powerplay.  Calgary settled down and the rest of the period was pretty even, and both teams were held scoreless.

-The second period wasn’t too eventful, aside from JT Miller’s first NHL fight.

-In the third the Rangers came out pressuring the Flames. Brassard intercepted the puck in the high slot and passed it to Hayes who put it past Ramo.  I thought that line looked good tonight, and Hayes did a good enough job filling in for Rick Nash, who did not play due to Neck Spasms.

-The Rangers did a much better job of keeping up the pressure in the third period with the lead.  In past games they have been greatly outshot while protecting the lead, but tonight they were able to outshoot Calgary 10-6 in the third.

-Oscar Lindberg was quiet in his NHL debut, which probably isn’t a bad thing. He had the least ice time of anyone on the team (8:18). He made one or two minor turnovers, but otherwise seemed pretty confident with the puck and in good position when he didn’t have it.  Hagelin, who played on his wing tonight had a very strong game.  He was really flying up and down the ice, possessing the puck, and making things happen in the offensive zone.

-Talbot looked much more comfortable in net tonight.  I didn’t think he had to make any insanely difficult saves, but after some shaky performances lately it was nice to see him pitch a shutout tonight.

-The Rangers are now 8-1-2 since Lundqvist got hurt.  This was the first time since January 29 against the Canadiens that the Rangers scored less than 2 goals.  It was also their first shutout since December 21 against Carolina.
