Bob McKenzie reports that the Rangers are among the front-runners for college UFA goaltender Matt O’Connor.
An O’Connor signing isn’t imminent, however. The goalie is still in action for Boston University, and may visit with some finalists.
Larry Brooks reported that the Rangers were expected to be interested in the goalie a few weeks ago.
The Rangers have one contract spot available under the limit of 50 for this season. Players have been able to sign entry-level contracts starting next season since the beginning of this month, however, a team’s ability to burn the first year of the entry-level contract can a big plus in negotiations.
O’Connor, 23, is a junior for BU. He went 22-3-4 this season with a 0.928 SV% and a 2.12 GAA.
